Some of the more commonly used citation style guides have been updated to include information about citing generative AI apps, specifically ChatGPT.
- Reference: OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat
- Parenthetical citation: (OpenAI, 2023)
- Narrative citation: OpenAI (2023) (McAdoo, 2024)
- Works Cited: "Prompt" prompt. ChatGPT, version, publisher, date accessed, website of chat
- Example: “Describe the symbolism of the green light in the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald” prompt. ChatGPT, 13 Feb. version, OpenAI, 8 Mar. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat. (MLA, How Do I Cite Generative AI in MLA Style?)
- Text Acknowledgement: For most types of writing, you can simply acknowledge the AI tool in your text (e.g., “The following recipe for pizza dough was generated by ChatGPT”).
- Numbered Footnote or Endnote: 1. Text generated by ChatGPT, OpenAI, March 7, 2023, https://chat.openai.com/chat.
- Author/Date: Any information not in the text would be placed in a parenthetical text reference. For example, “(ChatGPT, March 7, 2023).”
- Bibliography: Don't cite ChatGPT in a bibliography or reference list unless you provide a publicly available link The Chicago Manual of Style, n.d)
