Secondary Sources for HI302

Digitized Secondary Sources

The Center for Military History has created some excellent secondary sources that can be used to gain background knowledge and context for the campaign and your chosen unit.

  • Cross Channel Attack - U.S. Army Center of Military History
    • This particular volume deals with the planning and the difficulties encountered incident to the mounting of the largest amphibious assault ever undertaken in military history.
  • Breakout and Pursuit - U.S. Army Center of Military History
    • Covering the period 1 July to 11 September 1944, Breakout and Pursuit takes up the story of the European campaign at the time when the Allies considered their cross-Channel beachhead well established on the Continent. How the Allies exploited the initial success of their landings and drove from the shores of Normandy to the German border is the subject of the volume.
  • CMH Pub 100-13: St-Lô (7 July - 19 July 1944)
    • St-Lo is the story of a corps in the First Army during the bitter July battle that led up to and made possible the great breakthrough from the Normandy beachheads. This was the period of the most intense hedgerow fighting. XIX Corps' part in it has been chosen to illustrate this type of combat. The record of other First Army units in this operation have been covered only in outline
