Can I borrow books, DVDs, and other materials from the USMA Library?

  • Yes! There is no limit to how many items you can check out at once.

What is my library card? Where do I check out books?

  • Your CAC is used to check out materials at the Front Desk, located in the rotunda on the 1st floor of Jefferson Hall (near the Jefferson Statue).

How do I renew an item?

  • Log in to your account using your westpoint.edu O365 credentials.
  • Use the dropdown menu to find the due date.
  • If you want to renew, check the box to the left of the item you want to renew, and click “Renew Selected” or choose to “Renew All.”
    • If the renewal was not successful, you will see a message that “Not all renewals were successful. See details below.” There will be a message in the status section on why it was not successful. Bring the item back or contact us to find out more.

Where do I return materials?

  • You can return materials to the Front Desk where you checked them out. You can leave them in the book return to the left of the desk, at the base of the stairs, or you can hand them to the staff member at the Front Desk.

Why did I receive a library notice?

  • Requested Material Ready for Pick Up: You will receive an email stating that the material you requested is ready for pick up at the Front Desk. Requested materials are held for 7 days and then returned. Visit the Front Desk and tell the staff member your name, and that you are picking up a book you requested.
  • Due Dates and Overdue Notifications: You will receive emails when you check out library materials, when materials are due soon, and when materials are overdue. If you do not return the item by the 3rd notice, it will be considered lost. You will be required to return, replace, or pay for the item(s) in order to have your library privileges restored.

What if I lose an item I checked out?

  • You are responsible for providing a replacement. Email us at frontdesk@usmalibrary.org with the title/author of the lost item. We will respond with replacement instructions.
  • Once you have the replacement item, bring it to the Front Desk. The staff member will make a note in your account that you brought a replacement item to the library. The staff member will bring it to the head of our Collection department who will approve or disapprove of the replacement. If it is approved, the item will be removed from your account. If it is not approved, we will contact you.
  • If a replacement copy is not available, you will be charged $100. Payment is required in the form of a money order or check made out to the “Treasurer of the United States.” We strongly prefer you replace the item.
  • If you have materials in a “billed” status, you will not be able to check out additional materials or collaborative rooms.

  • If you want to renew, check the box to the left of the item you want to renew, and click “Renew Selected” or choose to “Renew All.”
    • If the renewal was not successful, you will see a message that “Not all renewals were successful. See details below.” There will be a message in the status section on why it was not successful. Bring the item back or contact us to find out more.

Where do I return materials?

There is no limit to how many items you can check out at once. Note: Interlibrary loan services may only be used by current cadets, faculty, and staff to meet mission requirements.

  • We issue you a library card to use to check out materials at the Front Desk, located in the rotunda on the 1st floor of Jefferson Hall (near the Jefferson Statue).

  • Once you have the replacement item, bring it to the Front Desk. The staff member will make a note in your account that you brought a replacement item to the library. The staff member will bring it to the head of our Collection department who will approve or disapprove of the replacement. If it is approved, the item will be removed from your account. If it is not approved, we will contact you.
  • If a replacement copy is not available, you will be charged $100. Payment is required in the form of a money order or check made out to the “Treasurer of the United States.” We strongly prefer you to replace the item instead of this option.
  • If you have materials in a “billed” status, you will not be able to check out any additional items from the library until you replace the item or pay the fee. The sponsor for your account will not be able to out-process the library until the item is replaced or the fee is paid.

Can I borrow books, DVDs, and other materials from the USMA Library?

  • No, IAW Library Policy Operating Memorandum No. 2-1 Circulation of Library Materials, borrowing privileges are limited to
    • Cadets
    • Cadet Candidates
    • USMA and USMAPS faculty and their spouses, who may also borrow on behalf of their children.
    • West Point GS staff (non-contract employees) and their spouses, who may also borrow on behalf of their children.
    • Members of the U.S. military stationed at West Point and their spouses, who may also borrow on behalf of their children.

Looking for a book, eBook, or DVD that we do not have?

Scout is your first place to look! You can request over 5,000,000 items directly through Scout from selected New York academic libraries.

  • Sign in to Scout with your westpoint.edu M365 credentials.
  • Search for your resource.  Select "Regional Request (ready in about a week)".
  • Verify the information on the form. Select "Send Request".
  • You will receive verification of your successful request placement on the screen. 
  • Requested materials:
    • are generally available for pick up at the Front Desk in about 1 week.
    • are generally due in 16 weeks.
    • are renewable.
  • You will receive an email when materials are ready for pick up at the Front Desk. Materials will be returned to the lending library if they are not picked up within 7 days.
  • You may review all of your requests in your Scout account by selecting the down arrow next to your name in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
  • Return materials to the Front Desk by their due date.

Interlibrary Loan is used to borrow materials that are not available in Scout.

  • Sign in to Interlibrary Loan with your westpoint.edu M365 credentials.
     
  • Place a request by searching:
    • Use the search field at the top of the screen or select "Advanced Search".
    • Click the title of the item you would like to request.
    • Click the blue button on the right side of the screen "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan".
    • Verify information in the form, acknowledge copyright, and submit your request.
       
  • Place a request by clicking "Create Request":
    • Choose ArticleBook or Book Chapter or Other.
    • Complete as much as the request form as possible, acknowledge copyright, and submit your request.
       
  • Book requests are generally available for pick up in 7-14 days. You will receive an email when materials are ready for pick up at the Front Desk. Materials will be returned to the lending library if they are not picked up within 7 days. The loan period is determined by the lending library though it is often 30 days. Return books to the Front Desk by their due date.
     
  • Article requests are generally filled electronically within 24 hours. You will receive an email with instructions for retrieving the article once it is available.
     
  • Review the status of your requests by logging in to your Interlibrary Loan account.
