How to Search

Type any search term into the Search box and hit enter (or the spyglass icon).

Once results appear, you will be able to filter or sort them with the modifiers on the left side of the web page.

Filter Search Results

  • Author: This filter will allow you to select works based on the author's name. You can either search the name or click Show more until the name appears. The author names are in alphabetical order.
  • Subject: This filter will allow you to select works based on subject. You can type in a subject in the search, or select to Browse subject tree which will provide the list of related subjects.
  • Date: This filter will allow you to filter results based on the date of publication. You can choose to input a start and end date, move the ends of the colored bar, or select from a date range populated by results.
  • Has files: This filter will allow you to filter by works that include files, ideally most submissions will include attached files to populate the thumbnail image. 

Sort By

  • Most Relevant: This option sorts results based on relevance to your search term.
  • Title Ascending: This option sorts results based on alphabetical order of the title.
  • Date Issued Descending: This option sorts results based on the date of publication.
  • Accessioned Date Descending: This option sorts results based on the date is was added into the USMA Digital Commons repository.

 

How to Cite Content found on Athena

Citations listed for works are in a variety of citation styles, although Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition is preferred.

Zotero is the library's recommended citation management tool. 

 

Browse by Communities & Collections

In the home page, select Communities & Collections from the top of the page.

This will open a new page that includes a List of Communities.

Navigate through the List of Communities by clicking on the name of a community to see all works cataloged within that community.

Or, click the arrows to the left of any community name to open the list of subcommunities that fall under the community subject.

Browse by Issue Date 

From the home page, click the dropdown next to Browse the Repository at the top of the page, then select By issue date from the dropdown menu.

A new page will open where you can filter all results by choosing year and month, or by typing in a date and clicking Browse.

 

Browse by Author 

From the home page, click the dropdown next to Browse the Repository at the top of the page, then select By author from the dropdown menu.

A new page will open where you can scroll through all author names alphabetically and select one you would like to view, or by typing in a letter, to refine the alphabetical list. Additionally, you can type in and entire name and click Browse.

Please note that in some cases there may be more than one name listed (differing variations) for a single author.  Removing such duplicates is an ongoing process and the Library makes every effort to correct author name issues as they appear. Feel free to notify the Library through resourcesupport@usmalibrary.org if you experience an issue with author name duplication. Submitting authors are encouraged to submit their works under their preferred name in a consistent manner, despite how their name is listed by the publisher.

 

Browse by Title

From the home page, click the dropdown next to Browse the Repository at the top of the page, then select By title from the dropdown menu.

A new page will open where you can scroll through all titles alphabetically and select one you would like to view, or by typing in a letter or two, to refine the alphabetical list. Additionally, you can type in and entire title and click Browse.

 

Browse by Subject 

From the home page, click the dropdown next to Browse the Repository at the top of the page, then select By subject from the dropdown menu.

A new page will open where you can scroll through all listed subjects alphabetically and select one you would like to view, or by typing in a letter or two, to refine the alphabetical list. Additionally, you can type in an entire subject and click Browse.

The results that appear will allow you to browse by Academic Department, Research Center, or other Research Unit as well as general subject headings.

Note: If you don't see the Department, Research Center, or other Research Unit listed, please notify library staff at resourcesupport@usmalibrary.org. The Library makes every effort to include all resources at USMA.
