Generative Artificial Intelligence

Please look on the course syllabus and check with your instructor to determine whether using generative AI is acceptable for your assignment. 

YOU, not the Generative AI tool or its developer are the author of your scholarship. Ensure that all information cited is factually correct and confirm the validity of any sources produced.

Some of the more commonly used citation style guides have been updated to include information about citing generative AI apps, specifically ChatGPT.

        APA
  • Reference: OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat
  • Parenthetical citation: (OpenAI, 2023)
  • Narrative citation: OpenAI (2023) (McAdoo, 2024)
     MLA       
  • Works Cited: "Prompt" prompt. ChatGPT, version, publisher, date accessed, website of chat
  • Example: “Describe the symbolism of the green light in the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald” prompt. ChatGPT, 13 Feb. version, OpenAI, 8 Mar. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat. (MLA, How Do I Cite Generative AI in MLA Style?)
      Chicago/Turabian     
  • Text Acknowledgement: For most types of writing, you can simply acknowledge the AI tool in your text (e.g., “The following recipe for pizza dough was generated by ChatGPT”).
  • Numbered Footnote or Endnote: 1. Text generated by ChatGPT, OpenAI, March 7, 2023, https://chat.openai.com/chat.
  •  Author/Date: Any information not in the text would be placed in a parenthetical text reference. For example, “(ChatGPT, March 7, 2023).”
  • Bibliography: Don't cite ChatGPT in a bibliography or reference list unless you provide a publicly available link The Chicago Manual of Style, n.d)
