This article gives practical solutions for aligning assessment with learning outcomes and deciding whether generative AI is an appropriate tool for use in assessment.

Hanover Research produced Assessment and Generative Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education in April 2024 to answer the question, "What are the emerging trends in discussions about how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way higher education institutions teach, particularly in relation to competency-based education and assessment?" The following infographic is from that report:

Having a standardized method for informing students about what they can expect about generative AI use during an assessment can help both you and the students clearly understand if and how generative AI can be used on assignments, papers, or projects.  Perkins and his colleagues at Cornell University created this scale to simplify this issue.

Generative AI can help produce content to use in your classes.  Consider some of these ideas:

  • Enter the scope of your class into ChagGPT and ask it to create a syllabus.
  • Ask ChatGPT to provide examples of a concept or topic - you can tailor this to the level of the students you are teaching.
  • Ask ChagGPT to create exam or assessment questions on a topic.
  • Ask ChatGPT to come up with an engaging activity to help students learn a concept.

The important caveat to these exercises is to always check the output for errors or hallucinations.
