Generative AI
Now that we have considered what AI is and explained machine learning, we are going to focus in on GenAI. When prompted for a definition GenAI, ChatGPT (one of many GenAI tools) returned the following result:
Generative AI refers to a subset of artificial intelligence that involves creating models capable of generating new data, images, text, or other content based on patterns learned from existing data.
GenAI is one of many numerous applications of Artificial Intelligence. In its simplest form, GenAI is a component of a framework consisting of five types of technology that, when integrated, are able to produce new content. Explore the graphic below to see how GenAI fits into the larger scope of AI technology.
GenAI uses LLMs and other models to generate new content. A user inputs a prompt (a question or instructions) and in the case of a text-based application, the LLM uses its training data to predict which words will statistically be close to each other and provides an output. GenAI can produce more than text. There are multimodal applications that can create images, videos, and 3D models and they work using the same process.
